Philippine de Rothschild dies at 80
Baronne Philippine de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild died last Friday [22nd August] aged 80. She presided over the family company Baron Philippe de Rothschild and with her three children was owner of classed growths Armailhac and Clerc Milon as well as Mouton.
Under her stage name Philippine Pascal she enjoyed a successful career as an actress with the Comédie Française before abandoning the stage to take over at Mouton following her father’s death in 1988. She proved herself a worthy successor to Baron Philippe and Mouton and the other properties have gone from strength to strength under her stewardship.
Alain Juppé, mayor of Bordeaux, commented: “I pay tribute to this great woman who I particularly liked and who did much for the cultural influence of our country. I salute her outstanding work in the development of the wine industry in Bordeaux and her support for our project Cité des Civilisations du vin.”
David Rowe, a wine consultant based in Bordeaux and the former editor of Decanter Magazine, contributed this piece.
