Bordeaux 2025: Lalande de Pomerol
I only got to taste six wines from the Lalande de Pomerol appellation. I had these at the Grand Cercle tasting them blind. If I’m being honest, these were the most mixed wines of the right bank appellations in 2025. Again, I attribute this to the challenge of the drought and the heat on the sandy and sandy/gravel soils of the appellation. The exception here was a very positive wine from Château Siaurac, which would definitely be one to seek out if priced reasonably. La Surgue and Château de Chambrun were also both good and should turn out well. I hope you find the detailed notes below useful.
The following wines were tasted at the Grand Cercle tasting on Sunday 19th April, 2026 at Château de la Dauphine.
Château de Chambrun, Lalande de Pomerol, 2025
Deep and saturated colour; full aromatics; deep; plums and some ripe Merlot notes; plums; enticing and moreish; quite ripe but not over ripe; fresher palate; quite tight and acidity obvious; feel tighter and more zappy; less generous than the morning’s samples from Fronsac. That said this will settle during elevage and will provide fresh, bright drinking. Tasted blind Grand Cercle 19/4/26. Drink 2029-2039. 87-89+
Château Haut Chaigneau, Lalande de Pomerol, 2025
Mid depth; saturated at the core; nice creamy aromatics; bright black cherry and summer compote; fresh and juicy; some graphite too; emphasis on the black cherry fruit; fresh and vibrant; quite tight with zap; fresher and higher acidity; quite high-toned palate; little sour edge on the finish; lacks depth back end. Tasted blind Grand Cercle 19/4/26. Drink 2029-2035. 86-88+
Château La Croix Chaigneau Lalande de Pomerol, 2025
Deep; slightly looser colour; little white wine note; oak and fruit; some medicinal notes; could be described as satin and somewhat sexy perhaps; again oak influenced; bit white wine in feel on the palate; lacks depth. Quite sappy and austere on the finish. Tasted blind Grand Cercle 19/4/26. Drink 2028-2035. 85-87
La Surgue, Lalande de Pomerol, 2025
Deep-ish; fresh cassis and black plum tones; sweet and sour edge again; some satin-y red fruit notes; opens up a bit in the glass; little higher red fruit tones; palate is tighter; quite vivacious though if with stronger acids; has nice texture and well handled in the cellar; not too rasping as some; zappy rather than sappy finish. Works well. Tasted blind Grand Cercle 19/4/26. Drink 2029-2038. 89-91+
Château Moncets, Lalande de Pomerol, 2025
Deep and saturated; glossy looking; healthy; sat colour; bolder black cherry with some wet earth and mineral notes; quite solid but works well; nice black cherry; has purity; very full and satisfying aromatically; quite gutsy and extracted on the palate; rasping acidity is a little puckering. Quite dry on the finish [from acidity not tannin I feel]. Tasted blind Grand Cercle 19/4/26. Drink 2029-2035. 86-88
Château Siaurac, Lalande de Pomerol, 2025
Deep; slightly looser at edge; this is more stalky plum notes; spice and zap; definitely cool fruit tones; bluer and zappier; has some graphite and minerality; attractive blue fruit tones; very Bordeaux; this has more generosity on the mid palate; zap and verve; works well with lots of summer fruit compote flavours on the palate with and attractive twist of acidity. Fresh and flavoursome. Tasted blind Grand Cercle 19/4/26. Drink 2029-2040. 90-91+
