Bordeaux 2012 In Bottle: Pomerol

Written by JW. Posted in Bordeaux

IMG_6215The nine wines from Pomerol shown at last month’s UGCB tasting were forward and delicious. It’s a small snapshot of the appellation obviously but there was nice life and zest in the wines shown. Château La Conseillante, Château Gazin and Château Petit-Village led the pack, along with Château Clinet. Château Beauregard, Château La Croix de Gay and Château La Pointe looked very good too.

2012 is definitely a good vintage for Pomerol and I remember that the line up of JP Moueix was especially impressive during primeurs when tasted eighteen months ago. Among the UGCB members wines shown late last month there was an attractive tension between the fruit and the sap of the wines. These are not blockbusters but have attractive delicacy and life. Once again the forward nature of the vintage was evident – some were drinking nicely already – and I shouldn’t think they will need much more than medium term cellaring, though you’d expect them to remain in good shape as the acids feel reasonably vibrant.

Below are the full notes taken at the UGCB event at Covent Garden last month. Hope they are useful!

Château Beauregard

Deepish; bright and high toned aromatics; fresh spices and plum tones; blackcurrant fruit; inky; nice chew to the palate with good balance between the fruit, structure and acidity. Sappy and vibrant Pomerol with plenty of flesh. [70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc]. Drink 2015-2025. 89+

Château Le Bon Pasteur

Mid depth; saturated at centre; full and sweet with wet rock notes; some cream and plum tones with spicy highlights; quite approachable on the palate and not overdone. Soft and easy with attractive fruit and some grip on the finish. Drink 2015-2025. 88

Château La Cabanne

Deep and saturated look; quite full and fat on the nose with plum and chocolate notes; full palate again; ripe and quite fat with plummy tones and a good finish. Good effort from La Cabanne. Drink 2015-2025. 88+

Château Clinet

Mid depth; glossy looking; satiny quality to the aromatics with layers; real delicacy on the palate; nicely polished; good length. Little reticent for Clinet. Nicely composed. Drink 2017-2027. 91+

Château La Conseillante

Mid depth; unctuous and satiny aromatics; plenty of plum and spice tones and layers of fruit; menthol tones; palate has some fatness and weight but there is an attractive delicacy here which makes this wine very attractive. Drink 2015-2027. 92+

Château La Croix de Gay

Mid depth; pretty nose; ripe Pomerol with beautiful Merlot tones; easy and pretty; harmonious on the palate with plenty of fruit and some bite. Nicely done. Drink 2015-2025. 90+

Château Gazin

Mid depth; earthy blackcurrant and plum tones; extract and matter; fresh plum and spices; nicely saturated palate with tension between the weight and freshness [nice]; attractive and forward Gazin. Drink 2016-2026. 92+

Château Petit-Village

Deep and saturated look; intense aromatics; plums and fruit cake spices; very attractive; full palate with similar and very attractive fruit profiles; this is full and easy going Pomerol that maybe lacks a little density but which is forward and delicious. Drink 2015-2025. 91+

Château La Pointe

Mid depth; deepish at the core; juicy notes with some spices and red fruits; little jam; easy and attractive fruit on the palate; soft and spicy with delicacy; perhaps less depth than I remember at primeurs but still forward and attractive Pomerol. Drink 2015-2025. 89+
